Portfolio Federico Garcia Lorca - Graphic by Lüpertz
Markus Lüpertz
The painter and sculptor Markus Lüpertz was born in 1941 in Reichenberg (today Liberec in the Czech Republic) and studied at the School for Applied Arts in Krefeld and afterwards at the State Academy of Arts in Düsseldorf (1956-71). In 1976 he was appointed professor at the State Academy for Visual Arts in Karlsruhe and became the director of the Academy in Düsseldorf in 1986.
After moving to Berlin in 1963 Lüpertz developed expressive and figurative forms of expressions in his so-called "Dithyrambic Painting" which contrasted heavily with the art of his contemporaries. Thematically he relates to art history as well as to current political events. Thus, his use of helmets from the Third Reich caused some alarm in the 1970s. Among others his works can be seen in the Fine Arts Museum (San Francisco) and the Museo Bilbao (Spain).
