Portfolio Federico Garcia Lorca - Graphic by De Guimarães
De Guimarães
Born in 1939 in Guimarães (Portugal) as José Maria Fernandez Marques, de Guimarães is one of the few internationally established contemporary artists from Portugal. His biography mirrors the history and traditions of his country in an unique way. In his art he broaches the issue of modern everyday life with all its occurrences, translating these topics into archaic and vivid shapes and colours.
He developed an artistic language consisting of symbols, a circular alphabet of shapes that help him creating image-objects like African totems. He is interested in art freed from canvas or volume. Since 1960 he has been regularly exhibiting his works in Europe, Japan and Southern America.
In 1984 the first retrospective of his works was held at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. His works can be found in numerous public and private collections all over the world. José de Guimarães lives and works in Lisbon and Paris.
