ARMAN
Born in Nice in 1928, ARMAN is one of the most signi- ficant object artists in the international art scene. In the beginning of the 1960s he developed the concept of the now famous "Poubelles" (Boxes made of acrylic glass enclosing domestic waste), from which later on emanated the so-called "Accumulations" (conglomerations of identi- cal subjects in viewing boxes).
The artist uses his objects as a medium to express his critical view upon modern mass products' one-sided consumptive character. In a monumental object named "Long Term Parking" and consisting of 60 cars, this critical view reached its climax. Next to artists like Klein, Tinguely, Raysse and César, together with whom he signed the "Manifesto du Nouvelle Réalisme", ARMAN is one of the most important representatives of the Nouveau Réalisme movement. Since the 1950s his art has been shown in numerous exhibitions all over Europe, repeatedly inclu- ding the Documenta in Kassel. ARMAN died in 2005.
