With the Low cost airline from Berlin to Pisa and there are only 20 minutes left to the place, where the marble mining of the popular "Bianca Carrara" takes place. This advice was made by the director of the Italian tourism center ENIT in the context of the private view "Uomini e Marmo: I Colori del Bianco" on November 2th, presented by the Italian culture institute. More than 200 visitors saw impressing photographies, films and assured themselves of the colour variety of the marble sculptures made by Italian and German artists. The exhibition can be visited with free entry until November 30th.

CARRARA - ART AND HISTORY

A trip through the fascinating spectrum of colors of Apuane Alps marble.
The old quarries..., the lanes of "lizza", the routes of transport constructed in the mountains.

Newsreels from 1922 as evidence of the transport of an enormous monolith. Scenarios of the life... on a "normal" working day. Moments of social community and old rites... interviews with "carrarini" who live for the marble... and die by the marble. Exertion and dedication for their work... the life in the workshops.
About the idea to create sculptures... from design to the completed work. Ancient techniques of handling and their modern development Sculptures of German and Italian Artists. Connected by the passion for marble that takes Artists from all around the world to the Apane Alps since Michelangelo. The uniqueness of this place and of the technical tradition that can't be found anywhere else. Innovations in tradition... Carrara's "Accademia della Belle Arti", founded in 1769 it's ambition is always avant-garde. An interesting ramble through the ambience of contemporary art.
