"ZHANG XIUZHU - As Time Goes By"
till October 27th, 2011

Zhang Xiuzhu, born in 1950, is a very renowned Chinese artist whose works belong to the avant-guard of the New Chinese Painting. In his unique works he impressively combines contemporary art and tradition.

"Whether I am working in ink wash, line drawings, sculpture or oil painting, the techniques and expressions I employ are traditional spiritual expressions of Chinese style. For me the only difference is just the materials. I have developed the ability to freely and naturally transform the spirit of Eastern art expression and technique to a form of contemporary expression."

""As time goes by" is lyrics from "The Peony Pavilion" by Tang Xianzhu (Ming Dynasty), and the lines also appeared in "A Dream of Red Mansions" (Chinese novel from the 18th century). With context, they show delicate and charming manner of oriental woman. It fits my expression."

"The renowned Chinese painter Zhang Xiuzhu is an artist totally enamoured of the Asian feminine mystique in the series that he calls "As Time Goes By - Theatrical Life"... Centralized discretely against the pure white ground, Zhang's towering figures have the majesty of the mountain peaks in traditional Chinese painting..."

- Maurice Taplinger, Art critic, New York -

"What makes his series most unusual is the fact that he moves away from the dominant subject matters in calligraphy - poetry or landscapes - to use his brush and ink as freely as he would use a pen... The fact that Zhang Xiuzhu has become an accomplished artist is all to his credit, based on his will, and determination. That loose association with art faculties has provided Zhang Xiuzhu with the freedom to go about art history in a creative, yet very respectful way."

- Olivia Sand, Art critic -

"The most outstanding and valuable aspect of his artistic endeavour is his search for a common ground between two poles of Western and Eastern cultures. Generally speaking, Western painting emphasizes the represen-tation of the external form of the subject while Eastern painting emphasizes the capture of its inner spirit or essence. It may be said that Zhang Xiuzhu employs Western technique to unlock the door to Eastern sentiments and thoughts. Inherent in his search is a strong spirit of adventure and creativity."

- Sun Meilan, art critic, professor of china central academy of fine arts -
